Palma, June 9, 2025 – The web application developed by APSL Nagarro for Mercator Ocean International is being presented this week at the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, coinciding with International Ocean Day. This development underscores APSL Nagarro's commitment to cutting-edge technology in the service of sustainability and scientific research.
The interactive application was designed to analyze and visualize in real-time the crucial impact of various ocean observation systems – including satellites and both fixed and mobile in-situ platforms (ship-borne) – on the accuracy of ocean forecasts, which are generated using numerical models. This project is part of the European Union's Copernicus Marine Service program, of which Mercator Ocean International is a key implementer. Furthermore, it has been implemented using European Ocean Digital Twin (DTO) technology.
The tool allows users, from scientists to policymakers and interested public, to analyze observations in real time and understand the vital importance of these systems. The primary goal is to raise awareness of how essential data, such as ocean temperature – with its direct impact on marine life and climate patterns – is collected and how it contributes to a better understanding and protection of our seas. Additionally, real-world cases are presented to illustrate how information collected by observation systems is fundamental to increasing the reliability of ocean behavior forecasts, thus facilitating their comprehension.
Antoni Aloy, Co-Founder of APSL and Nagarro, explained that "this application not only demonstrates our ability to develop complex and visually impactful technological solutions, but also reinforces our commitment to creating tools that support global sustainability and the objectives of UNOC3. Being part of the solution to understanding and protecting our oceans and seas is a privilege."
APSL Nagarro was awarded the project tender, which includes the development of this web application, as well as its maintenance and technical support, ensuring continuous and optimal operation of the service for Mercator Ocean International.
The Third UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3), co-hosted by the governments of France and Costa Rica, is a fundamental event for driving global action towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14): Life Below Water. The presentation of this tool at UNOC3 highlights its relevance to the international scientific community and efforts for sustainable ocean management.
